Set to music by Igor Stravinsky Firebird is Artistic Director Robert Weiss’s version of the beloved Russian folktale. This program also features Walpurgisnacht, a new ballet from Company Principal Timour Bourtasenkov, whose transcendent version of Vivaldi’s Gloria premiered during the 2005-2006 season.




DRACULA
The Masque of the Red Death

Long before the Twilight vampires invaded Hollywood, there was Dracula, the original Transylvanian prince of darkness. Now the undead Count swoops into Lynne Taylor-Corbett's atmospheric new work, featuring Broadway actor Alan Campbell. The program also includes The Masque of the Red Death, a new ballet by Robert Weiss.




 

PINOCCHIO
November 24-28, 2010

Pinocchio was an immediate hit with audiences when the ballet had its premiere last year in Seattle. Now the puppet-turned-boy pays us a visit in the original Pacific Northwest Ballet production by acclaimed choreographer Bruce Wells. Favorites from Carolina Ballet’s repertory of works are also featured on this Thanksgiving holiday offering.




 

NUTCRACKER

Nutcracker is one of the great classical story ballets, and this production is from Robert Weiss, who has created the “best full-evening story ballets of the past quarter-century.” (The Washington Post) Weiss’s Nutcracker is filled with beautiful sets and costumes, elaborate special effects and Tchaikovsky’s glorious music played by a live orchestra.



 

THE UGLY DUCKLING

When the “world-class choreographer” (The Washington Post) Robert Weiss creates a new ballet the dance world sits up and takes notice. Be the first to see his latest creation for the stage in its premiere at Carolina Ballet. Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s The Ugly Duckling is also featured on this program.

MONET IMPRESSIONS

Monet Impressions made quite an impression with audiences and dance critics when it premiered here in 2007. The New York Times praised its “dreamy, flowing” choreography and “strong … impressive” dancers. Now this beautiful homage to the great French painter Claude Monet makes its first return visit awash in the evocative music of his compatriots Chausson, Debussy and Poulenc.




 

A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM

The wait is over! The company’s long-anticipated first revival of George Balanchine’s exquisite take on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream returns with new-to-Raleigh sets and costumes. The program also features a new ballet by Company Principal Attila Bongar, who choreographed the striking Guernica from last season’s Picasso.
