Joined Carolina Ballet 2000

Attila Bongar began his ballet training at age 10 and studied at the Hungarian Dance Academy for nine years, graduating in 1999. Immediately following the graduation, he represented Hungary at the Eurovision Ballet Competition in Lyon, France and then joined the corps de ballet of the Hungarian National Ballet; during the year he was there he was also was fortunate to learn soloist and principal roles.  In spring 2000 he came to Carolina Ballet to be in the premiere productions of Robert Weiss’ Carmen and Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s Cabaret. In 2009, Bongar became a principal with the company.

In 2005, at the encouragement of Robert Weiss, Mr. Bongar choreographed and staged his first ballet, the Miraculous Mandarin, a ballet in one act to music by Bela Bartok.  Other ballets that Bongar has choreographed are Yin and Yang to music played on a Chinese Guzheng; Cavalleria Rusticana which he choreographed and premiered in 2007 at Carolina Ballet’s summer residency in Wilmington, NC; and Departed which premiered during the 2008-2009 regular season. Bongar is also the recipient of the prestigious New York Choreographic Institute Fellowship Grant for 2007-2008.
