Joined Carolina Ballet 2007

Marcelo Martinez was born in Paraguay where he began his training at the Academia de danza Bettina Ramos. Then he continued his training in Brazil at the Centro de Dança Rio under the instruction of Maria Angelica Fiorani. At age 17 he was accepted into the companhia Jovem do Teatro Mumicipal do Rio De Janerio where he danced for four years under the directions of Dalal Aschar And Mariza Estrella. Then moving on to join The Washington Ballet where he danced lead roles including Cavalier in "The Nutcracker", “Stravinsky Violin Concerto” by Balanchine," and “The Rite of Spring" by Trey MacIntyre. Then he joined Carolina Ballet July 2007 as a corps member, rose through the ranks, and was soon promoted to principal in 2010. With Carolina Ballet he's danced many principal roles such as "Romeo" in Robert Weiss' Romeo and Juliet, "James" in Bounneville La Sylphie, the Sangunic of Balanchine’s "The Four Temperments", El Captain pas de deux from Balanchine’s "Stars and Stripes", "La Sonambula" by Balanchine, and "Fancy Free" by Jerome Robbins. Some of those roles created on him include The Raven from Weiss' "Sleeping Beauty", Weiss' Pulse from "Time Gallery", Weiss' Polka from "Waltzes of Old Vienna", the Exotic Birds by Attila Bongar from Weiss' "Beauty and the Beast”, The Man of Darkness in "Carmina Burana" by Lynne Taylor-Corbett, and the title role of Dracula in Taylor-Corbetts' "Dracula". Marcelo has also appeared as a guest artist with Greensboro Ballet, Susan Farrell Ballet, Arka Ballet and The Raleigh Dance Theater.
