Principal Conductor

Alfred E. Sturgis has conducted a number of successful performances with Carolina Ballet including Messiah, Romeo & Juliet, Carmen, and Nutcracker. Sturgis is highly regarded for his versatility as a conductor in a variety of other musical arenas as well including orchestral, choral, and opera. His international conducting experiences have taken him to China, Bulgaria, France, and Italy. Locally he has appeared as a Guest Conductor for the North Carolina Symphony, Raleigh Civic Symphony, Winston-Salem Symphony, and the National Opera Company. Sturgis, who also serves as Music Director of the North Carolina Master Chorale was a 1996 recipient of the Raleigh Medal of Arts. In addition to his conducting experience, Sturgis was a featured soloist with the Robert Shaw Festival Singers, and he performs on a Grammy-winning CD by the same group.
