February 20, 2010 Honoring About the Cinderella Ball In existence even before the professional company of Carolina Ballet was formed, the Ballet Ball began in 1997 as a Mardi Gras themed party held each February. Always the event to attend as the area’s most enjoyable evening for dinner, dancing and socializing with other ballet enthusiasts, the Ballet Ball has evolved into Carolina Ballet’s major fund raising event of the season. This year's ball's theme, Cinderella, is taken from Carolina Ballet's perfomance of this famous fairy tale to be performed February 18-March 7, 2010 About Carolina Ballet Originally incorporated on November 11, 1984 as Raleigh Dance Theatre, Carolina Ballet grew out of the vision of J. Ward Purrington for the non-professional student company to become a professional ballet. Under Purrington’s leadership in 1994, Raleigh Dance Theatre began the process of transitioning to a professional company. With the selection of Robert Weiss as Artistic Director in April 1997, Carolina Ballet was launched as a fully-professional company with the Ballet’s inaugural season opening in the fall of 1998. To date, the company has presented nearly 600 performances to more than half a million audience members, not including the audiences reached through educational programs. Carolina Ballet has distinguished itself nationally by producing new works developed by some of the world’s most gifted choreographers, including famed choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, Tony nominated and company principal guest choreographer Lynne Taylor-Corbett, NYCB Ballet Master Richard Tanner, NYCB principal dancer Damian Woetzel, and Duke University faculty member Tyler Walters. More than 60 new works have been created during the company’s existence. In addition to touring in the state, Carolina Ballet has performed in New York City, Budapest, Hungary, and most recently, China with Robert Weiss’s Swan Lake.
Come and join us until the clock strikes midnight on February 20, 2010 at the Raleigh Marriott City Center for an evening of dinner and dancing combined with silent and live auctions to benefit Carolina Ballet.
