Serenata

“Balanchine was often asked if there was a story behind his Serenade to the music of Peter Ilich Tchaikovsky.  He always refused to divulge a plot and spoke instead of it being simply beautiful dancing to beautiful music.  Nevertheless, many people have read their own story into this wonderful ballet with its emotional ebb and flow.  I first heard Dvorak’s Serenade for Strings 20 years ago and thought even at that time what wonderful music for dancing, but I never could quite get my arms around a dance that would have a beginning, middle and an end.  Upon listening to the music again recently, it became clear to me that, as in Balanchine’s Serenade, the Dvorak music also had an emotional arc.  I too refuse to divulge a plot; the ballet should be enjoyed in terms of pure dance to extraordinary music.  But I hope everyone will find their own story in it.” —Robert Weiss
