Sturmische Liebe

I heard this music for the first time when I saw Martin Scorsese’s movie Shutter Island.  Although the whole piece is not played in the movie, there was enough to know that I wanted to hear it again and in its entirety.  It is scored for string quartet and piano and in my opinion it is one of Mahler’s most romantic compositions.  The music spoke to me of a tempestuous or stormy (sturmische) romantic relationship and although there is no plot per se, I was reminded of a famous quote by George Balanchine: “Put a man and a woman on stage and there is already a story.” —Robert Weiss
