Deadline to audition and enroll extended to May 12.

The Program || June 29 - August 3, 2008

Our summer intensive offers serious dance students an extraordinary program in association with Carolina Ballet's summer residency at UNC Wilmington.

During the residency students will study with a renowned faculty of experienced professionals including some of the world-class artists of the Carolina Ballet. This audition-only intensive offers the unique opportunity for students to witness Carolina Ballet in action including the chance to attend open rehearsals as new ballets are created for the company. This immersive five-week program will culminate in a final student performance at Kenan Auditorium and two performances by Carolina Ballet.

Students from the ages of 13 to 21 may audition during our National Audition Tour. We strongly recommend attending one of the auditions, but will also accept videotaped auditions for students unable to attend during our tour. Students residing in the Wilmington area will be selected by an audition in Wilmington and Raleigh to attend a special day program (ages 11 to 13), or the full day curriculum (age 13 to 21).

Campus Life
Moss-laden oaks, towering pines, and stately brick buildings make up the University of North Carolina Wilmington's picturesque campus. The University is located in the southeastern region of North Carolina, near the historic district of Wilmington, four miles from the Cape Fear River and five miles west of Wrightsville Beach and the Atlantic Ocean. Wilmington is now a flourishing business and tourist destination and the capital of North Carolina's film industry.

Supervised accommodations are located at the International House dormitories. Students will be housed in separate areas of the building according to gender and age. All living, dining, and studio facilities are located on campus. Students also have opportunities to make use of such on-campus facilities as tennis courts, volley ball courts, cinema, snack shop, and game room.

A healthy selection of meals is available in the Wagoner Hall dining facilities. Three meals a day are provided starting with dinner on June 29th , and ending with breakfast on Sunday, August 3rd.

Activities
For the enjoyment of our students, we are making arrangements for weekend and evening excursions such as a trips to the beach, a visit to Wilmington's historic downtown, and live music concerts in the beautiful Airlie Gardens, a 67-acre, century-old seaside oasis. A modest event fee will be required for all resident students so that they may participate in these activities. Movie nights and a guest lecture series will also be offered on campus on some weekday evenings.

Facilities
Three of the class/rehearsal spaces are located in UNC Wilmington's new, state-of the-art Cultural Arts Building. The fourth space is the newly renovated Kenan Auditorium. All spaces have sprung floors with professional quality dance surfaces.

The Curriculum

For resident students and day students in session A, each day will include up to 6 hours of instruction and rehearsals . Each day begins with a one hour and 40 minute ballet technique class . This will be followed by pointe, variations, men's, or partnering class.*

Afternoon classes and repertory rehearsals round out the rest of the curriculum. Additional studies in modern technique, jazz, yoga, and body conditioning complement a strong foundation in classical training.

Day students in session B and C begin each day with a ballet technique class. Classes in pointe, variations, modern, jazz, and rehearsals supplement these ¾ day programs

A special lecture series with such topics as dance history, music appreciation, and dancer health and injury prevention provide an enhanced educational experience.

*If we do not have a full contingent of male students, Company men will be employed in partnering classes as needed. Men's class will be substituted for pointe and variations for male students.

Trainee Program
Students accepted as summer trainees will have a specialized program that includes:

1) Company class with Carolina Ballet twice per week.

2) May be selected to perform in Carolina Ballet's performances

3) Up to two summer trainees may be selected to be apprentices with Carolina Ballet for the 2008-2009 season. (Carolina Ballet is currently looking to hire apprentices and company members.)
