This program is an exceptional opportunity for aspiring young dancers, ages 9-11, to enjoy a summer intensive training experience concurrent with Carolina Ballet's pre-professional summer intensive. Focus on early training is considered essential to realize full potential as a dancer and to prepare a student for the strength necessary to dance en pointe. Classes are intended to enhance technique, develop artistic qualities, and build on skills, with emphasis on correct alignment and posture.  The program will include a fun and enriching exploration of the history of ballet, story ballets, famous dancers, and ballet terminology, along with the chance to meet Carolina Ballet dancers and find out how they fell in love with, and started their training in classical ballet.

The Curriculum

An introduction to many of the aspects of the Carolina Ballet's pre-professional summer intensive. In addition to level appropriate and attentive instruction in ballet technique, supplemental classes in jazz, modern, choreography, and variations are offered. Additional studies will include dancers health, injury prevention, and strength and flexibility classes. Students will also have pool time during the week.

Primary Instructor, Cherilyn Joy Lee Kirkman

Cherilyn currently teaches at City Ballet and will be joining the Carolina Ballet Summer Intensive faculty as a primary teacher for the Young Dancer Program. A New York City native, Cherilyn's path has included being a scholarship student at the School of American Ballet and the Rock School of the Pennsylvania Ballet, a dancer with the Hartford Ballet in Connecticut, and a move to North Carolina to be one of the founding members of the Carolina Ballet. Throughout her career she performed diverse roles ranging from Juliet to Desdemona (The Moor's Pavane) to the Jumping Girl (Who Cares?) along with those in other ballets by George Balanchine, Robert Weiss, Lynne Taylor-Corbett, Kirk Peterson, and Tyler Walters. After a fulfilling career as a ballet dancer, Cherilyn continued her creative endeavors working in architecture and since then has decided to pursue her academic goals studying Spanish and Business at NC State University. Supplemental classes will be taught by other Carolina Ballet Summer Intensive faculty.

The Young Dancer Summer Program dates are June 24-July 19. Classes run Monday through Friday from 9:00-3:00pm with after care activities provided from 3:00-5:30pm. A boxed lunch is available for an additional charge of $40/week. No boarding at Saint Mary's School is provided for students in this program.
