Stars and Stripes – Pas de Deux

The oom-pah-pah rhythms of John Philip Sousa’s Stars and Stripes premiered January 17, 1958 by the New York City Ballet and the City Center for Music and Drama.  It is set to music of John Philip Sousa, who held the position of leader of the United States Marine Band for over 12 years.  This salute to America has been performed for Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson, When asked why he chose to choreograph Stars and Stripes to Sousa’s marches, Balanchine replied, “Because I like his music.”
