FIREBIRD & A Tribute to Russian Ballet & Its Composers
September 13-SEPTEMBER 30, 2018
Fletcher Opera Theater

Our 2018-2019 Season opens with the classic Russian fairy tale, Firebird. This spellbinding ballet combines all the elements of a great story-a handsome prince, a beautiful princess, and an evil sorcerer. Firebird is set to a powerful score by Igor Stravinsky. Tchaikovsky was an inspiration to Stravinsky and the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto is considered one of his greatest. Zalman Raffael, will take on this monumental work to open the season. Aram Khatucturian’s Spartacus has become a staple of Russian ballet.  Robert Weiss’ pas de deux evokes the Russian spirit of the music with bravura, lifts, turns and jumps.

FEATURING LIVE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

LOVE IN THE TIMES OF THE DAY - WORLD PREMIERE
January 31-February 17, 2019
Fletcher Opera Theater

Robert Weiss presents a new ballet based on paintings by Czech artist, Alfonse Mucha.  Weiss came across the series of paintings while visiting an art gallery in Prague and was inspired to bring them to life through ballet. Working with a specially commissioned score by J. Mark Scearce expressly for renowned pianist, William Wolfram, this is a ballet for lovers just in time for Valentine’s Day. The program will also feature Time Gallery, Weiss’ collaboration with Pulitzer prize-winning New York based composer, Paul Moravec.

AN EVENING OF BERNSTEIN & ROBBINS - COMPANY PREMIERE
March 7-24, 2019
Fletcher Opera Theater

To celebrate the 100th birthdays of Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins, icons of classical music and ballet, as well as Broadway, we will be reviving their Fancy Free - the ballet that changed American dance forever. This work was also the genesis of the Broadway show and Hollywood movie, On the Town. For the first time ever, we will present Jerome Robbins’ Afternoon of a Faun set to the music of Claude Debussy.

MONET IMPRESSIONS
April 11-14, 2019
Raleigh Memorial Auditorium

Join us for an evening of dance inspired by the famous paintings of Claude Monet featuring Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s Picnic on the Grass and Robert Weiss’ The Gardens of Giverny. This beautiful homage to the great French painter features the evocative music of his compatriots Chausson, Debussy, and Poulenc. Originally commissioned in 2007 by the North Carolina Museum of Art this two-part ballet has everything a dance lover could wish for: a story ballet based on Monet’s life to open and a sweeping impressionistic second act based on his famous garden paintings.

SWAN LAKE
May 16-19, 2019
Raleigh Memorial Auditorium

We close out our 21st Season with one of the most popular story ballets of all time. Swan Lake is an enchanting fairy tale that tells the story of a beautiful swan princess cursed to live as a swan until she can find true love. Set to one of Tchaikovsky’s greatest scores, Robert Weiss’ version is truly spectacular!
