2016 WINTER BALL – BENEFITING CAROLINA BALLET AND HONORING SUSAN GARRITY & JEFF BASHAM, TRICIA & STUART PHOENIX, AND ELISABETH & LARS VON KANTZOW

Hundreds of guests, resplendent in sleek tuxedos and glittering gowns, flocked into the Duke Energy Performing Arts Center for an evening that put the artistry and originality of the Ballet, front and center while honoring Carolina Ballet’s longtime patrons and benefactors: Susan Garrity & Jeff Basham, Tricia & Stuart Phoenix, and Elisabeth & Lars von Kantzow.

This year’s event included a cocktail hour, silent and live auctions, a raffle for “Diamonds and Decadence,” and a sumptuous dinner of rich comfort foods – perfect for a brisk February evening!  Elegant decorations emphasizing the wintry theme were crafted from fabrics from the ballet’s storehouses. Delicately arranged pointe shoes, gorgeous winter white floral displays, and candlelight led guests from Fletcher lobby into the Memorial atrium and lobby for dinner under the glittering chandeliers while guests admired the lights of downtown Raleigh.

The true highlight, however, was the opportunity for guests to be audience members as four of Carolina Ballet’s principal dancers took the stage at Fletcher Opera Theatre for two pas de deux that captured the company’s great strengths— the first, a stunning creation by Artistic Director Robert Weiss and the second, a classic from the Marius Petipa repertoire.

Several guests commented that they were reminded of New York City Ballet galas and other “big city” events that blend all-star performances with food and fun, exactly the feel the Ball’s co-chairs, Laura Bayzle, Jennifer Elam, and Linda Grew, had in mind as they, in collaboration with the Winter Gala Committee, brought this beautiful evening to life.

And the fun went on late into the evening.  An After Dark party featuring cocktails, desserts, and local band, Soul Play, drew plenty of guests onto the dance floor, and the “buzz” in the days after says that folks are already lining up to be on the Planning Committee next year!

Stay posted on plans for this lovely event in 2017!
