This program is an exceptional opportunity for aspiring young dancers, ages 9-11, to enjoy a summer intensive training experience concurrent with Carolina Ballet's pre-professional summer intensive. Focus on early training is considered essential to realize full potential as a dancer and to prepare a student for the strength necessary to dance en pointe. Classes are intended to enhance technique, develop artistic qualities, and build on skills, with emphasis on correct alignment and posture. The program will include a fun and enriching exploration of the history of ballet, story ballets, famous dancers, and ballet terminology, along with the chance to meet Carolina Ballet dancers and find out how they fell in love with, and started their training in classical ballet.
An introduction to many of the aspects of the Carolina Ballet's pre-professional summer intensive. In addition to level appropriate and attentive instruction in ballet technique, supplemental classes in jazz, modern, choreography, and variations are offered. Additional studies will include dancers health, injury prevention, and strength and flexibility classes. Students will also have pool time during the week.
Instructor, Carmen Felder
Carmen began her ballet training in Cary, NC at Cary Ballet Conservatory through high school. She spent summers training as a scholarship student at Houston Ballet Academy, Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Dance Theatre of Harlem. During the early years, Ms. Felder performed in Carolina Ballet's Coppelia and The Nutcracker. Ms. Felder went on to earn her BFA from the University of Oklahoma in Ballet Performance with a minor in German. While at OU, Carmen trained under Mary Margaret Holt and performed many lead roles with Oklahoma Festival Ballet as well as traveling with the company to dance in the Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Arts Festival. After graduation Carmen danced with Columbia City Ballet in Columbia, South Carolina. Carmen joined Carolina Ballet as a trainee in January 2011 and was promoted to the corps de ballet for the 2011-2012 season.

She attended Douglas Anderson School of the Arts High School as a member of Dance Theatre directed by Rhonda Stampalia. After her junior year, she was accepted into Miami City Ballet’s Pre-Professional Division training two years under Carter Alexander and Geta Constantinescu. Amanda had the opportunity to be coached by Edward Villella and perform Dark Angel in Balanchine’s Serenade for her first Student Showcase. The following year at Miami, she performed in Balanchine’s Allegro Brilliante and a soloist role in Paquita. Amanda attended eight summer intensives including Atlanta Ballet, North Carolina Dance Theatre, Boston Ballet, ABT New York, and The School of American Ballet where she was selected to perform in the New York Choreographic Institute. She also attended Boston Ballet’s Choreographic Intensive where she performed works by Jorma Elo and Helen Pickett. The summer of 2013, Amanda attended Carolina Ballet’s Summer Intensive as a trainee and was hired for the Carolina Ballet’s company season. In 2014 Amanda was promoted as a corps member.
